Mexico threatens lawsuit against Google over "Gulf of America" name on Google Maps

I'm curious if you mind being the first to answer a simple question?
If criticizing an obvious buffoon is "derangement" what would you call the idiocy
you MAGAs laid on Biden for 4 years? Of which easily 2\3+ was bullshit.
I'm pretty conservative but I'm not a "MAGA". I have no issues with people calling him out on anything they disagree with. But there is a difference in disagreeing with Trump's policies or disliking him personally and having "derangement". Derangement is the crazies you see screaming on youtube and social platforms because he won the election. When you start saying things like he's the next Hitler...or this quote from above:

"When are you people gonna realize the New Nazi Party is trying to take over the world.
Stand up for yourself and take back your country. Your running out of time."

Stuff like that is just nutty. People seem to have gotten so divided and the media has done such a great job of scaring everyone that logic seems to have gone out the window.

I don't particularly like the guy nor do I believe he's some kind of saint. But I can look at him or a situation without such bias that I go nuts in one direction or another.

As far as Biden...I'm not sure what issues you're talking about. I can't say I agree that 2/3+ was bs. I'd be curious to know what issues you mean.

not so sure about «socially» as I can see 0 situations where the name of a body of water would be socially inappropriate
It's a history thing.

I don’t think anyone had a problem with the Gulf of Mexico…
You would be wrong. This has been a debate since the 1940's. It's good that it's finally being addressed. I remember it being debated in every History class I had from middle school through graduation. The conclusion was always the same, the Gulf was misnamed.

Who was having this debate? If it was something that was so overwhelmingly important, I’m pretty sure it would have been renamed decades ago… heck, they renamed the Cleveland Indians and the Washington Redskins before this nonsense…

Failed at context again huh? Remember how I mentioned History class? What do History teachers do to inspire critical thinking? Yup.. The social implications are more interesting, however, they are also very controversial and would likely invoke the wrath of the TS mods. I will refrain except to say it's a change LONG overdue and Mexico needs to stop the whining.

Ok… by “who is having this debate” I should have clarified… “which important people were having this debate?”
School teachers and professors don’t count…

Who cares what US calls it, 99% of the planet doesn't call it that. Even if it did, again.. who cares? If I were American, id be worried about the higher taxes I'm suddenly forced to pay lol. Like holy moly.

I think you said that before, so my apologies, but you know the old saying about walking like a duck and sounding like a duck.

"When are you people gonna realize the New Nazi Party is trying to take over the world.
Stand up for yourself and take back your country. Your running out of time."
Well, I see that point. But MAGA is WAY closer to fascism than the left is to socialism.
The problem is, people that have been to socialist countries (I have been to 6) know just how far we are from socialism. The others throwing out those claims are just wind up toys.

As far as Biden...I'm not sure what issues you're talking about
Not even one, huh? That says a lot by itself.
How about how easy it would be for Biden to lower prices of food, something not in Presidential control. Didn't stop them. But now that prices are still going up, trump and his toys are quiet on that. People like me (millions) won't be. Priced eggs lately?

How many do you need me to mention?

Speaking as a person who hasn't lived in the US for many decades, I sincerely hope not.
Just looks like another small indication of "Amerikan" imperialism to me. Still, now that Trump and Putin are in bed together it will only be a matter of time.

I think you said that before, so my apologies, but you know the old saying about walking like a duck and sounding like a duck.
I think you're assuming because I don't generally defend Trump. I tend to look at what I believe to be truth and stick to that.

Well, I see that point. But MAGA is WAY closer to fascism than the left is to socialism.
I think too far in either direction is equally bad. But that's not the point really. You asked what made someone deranged. Again when you start seeing Hitler references it's getting a bit deranged.

Not even one, huh? That says a lot by itself.

I asked you to be more specific...I didn't say that I agreed with everything they accused him of.
As for the food issue and inflation....I think government spending during and after covid along with availability of things driving up prices is what ultimately caused inflation to spike. It started with Trump and ended with Biden. But I will say that Biden was still passing out money like crazy after covid had pretty much run it's course. I know that I got over $3k at one point during Biden's administration and covid had already calmed down at that point.

Trump·er·y
/ˈtrəmp(ə)rē/
archaic
noun
noun: trumpery; plural noun: trumperies

-attractive articles of little value or use.
"None of your woolen drapery, nor linen drapery, nor any of your frippery or trumpery. I hate ostentation"

-practices or beliefs that are superficially or visually appealing but have little real value or worth.
"he exposed their ideals as trumpery"

adjective
adjective: trumpery

-showy but worthless.
"trumpery jewelry"

Also in British-English vernacular, to "trump" is to fart loudly.

Seeing as all the countries that border the gulf are part of North America, I'd say the name change makes a lot of sense.

That said, I've heard that the name change was largely to bypass an EO from the previous administration blocking some kind of trade on the "Gulf of Mexico". Don't take my word for it; just something I heard.

Again when you start seeing Hitler references it's getting a bit deranged.
Do you honestly not see the commonality between fascism and trump?

I can say I personally don't see much at all wrong with this.
But (you knew that was coming) I can say I'm really fed up hearing about the wasteful left when everything we see getting cut from President Mump is only going to go to the very top wealthy friends of theirs in extended, and even more tax cuts.

EVERYONE likes waste, so long as THEY are the people benefitting from it.
But fairly divided waste will beat a tiny target of waste any day.
Something like 92% of trumps Tax cuts and jobs act of 2017 (combined) went to the top 1%.
Anyone that can not see a problem with that has no business in a conversation about waste.

I see how some people could tend to see him that way. But I think those people are generally very skewed in their perspective already. I mean some people are so filled with distrust, hate and paranoia that nothing he does will be judged honestly. I also think that the media has gone so over the top with negative/ possibly fake press at times and that has very much contributed to it. That said he didn't do his reputation any favors with accusations of fraud and whatnot when Biden won the election. I said back then that he needed to sit down shut up and be a man about it and concede. I was very unimpressed with how he acted at the time.

I agree that does sound like an obvious problem but I really don't know how accurate that is. I hear claims like that all time but it's hard to know what you can trust and what you can't. Everything is so divided now that it seems impossible to get facts that aren't twisted in one way or another.

And again I really don't have any desire to defend Trump. He's not my jam. :) But at the same time when I see people talking about the price of eggs and Trump when he's been in office for a month....come on. A year from now we should revisit this topic. That would make a lot more sense.

Ok… by “who is having this debate” I should have clarified… “which important people were having this debate?”

I'm not, and I agree with the change. It makes sense.

But MAGA is WAY closer to fascism than the left is to socialism.
That is total BS. There are goose-stepping nitwits on both sides of things. Cancel culture anyone? Setting your flag-pole on either extreme of those two sides is brainless and self defeating.

Yeah, so true, but behind all the baseless accusations are a simple set of facts that can not be ignored. One way or the other.

And the way I look at it is, the top 1% is made up of 1.8 million people +\-. I have seen the numbers as low as 80% in favor of that group, but the only way the numbers would be fair is if it worked out the same for everyone, and if you just read the parameters of the tax cuts and jobs act it skews heavily in the favor of the upper 1%.
But at the same time when I see people talking about the price of eggs and Trump when he's been in office for a month....come on.
But it was MUMP themselves that caused it. Eggs sky rocked just days (literally) after they started threatening our trade partners and our own farmers one month ago.
Sorry brother, but the price of eggs (and such) falls solely on this administration.

Ok yes. Though I'm not sure how any of that disproves that the CONServative wind up toys have gone way closer to fascism than the left have to socialism. As I said, I have been in socialist nations, and we are just fine. I mean, not even close to socialism.
It really is just a giant red light when the right points to the left and whines about socialism because knowing the facts, as always, is really just an education thing, and does not stop at the fact that the basics of socialism has been a part of American policy through its history.
The truth behind socialism and fascism is easy as hell to learn, but sadly many on the right call that "fancy learnin".

Yeah but the price of food has gone up a lot over the last 3 years or so. Are we only concerned about the things that have gone up since Trump took office? And who knows how his trade policies will play out. It's still very early...could go poorly but only time will tell.
