TSMC prepares to pass tariffs costs, could increase semiconductor prices by 15 percent

The big picture: As President Donald Trump enacts long-promised tariffs against Chinese products, duties against other international goods, including semiconductors from Taiwan, loom on the horizon. Recent reports indicate that TSMC plans to respond by passing costs onto consumers, likely dragging end products further away from the Moore's Law curve.

Commercial Times reports that TSMC might increase the prices of its most advanced semiconductor wafers by up to 15 percent this year. Rising production costs and potential US tariffs are the primary factors behind the prediction. Previously, analysts expected wafer prices to rise by five to 10 percent in 2025. The new forecast indicates that incoming tariffs may accelerate the increasing costs and blunted performance gains of recent products.

Taiwan's silicon giant is expected to raise prices for smaller nodes starting at 7nm. That relatively mature but still advanced node costs around $10,000 per wafer. Apple, TSMC's most privileged customer, currently pays $18,000 per 3nm wafter. Depending on the buyer, tariffs could increase 3nm prices to roughly $20,000 to $23,000 per wafer.

More expensive wafers compared to offerings from the previous decade have already resulted in pricier devices with less impressive performance improvements. Recent iPhone chips don't leapfrog their immediate predecessors as dramatically as before, and Nvidia's newly released RTX 50 series is one of the most disappointing graphics card generations in recent memory.

Analyzing specs across historical GPU lineups reveals a solid case for blaming the lukewarm performance uplifts on Nvidia's greed. However, rising semiconductor costs and the fact that RTX 50 uses the same node as RTX 40 also play a role.

While semiconductors from companies like TSMC and Samsung aren't facing tariffs yet, President Trump's recently enacted 10 percent tariff on Chinese products still impacts the products they power. Chinese companies still assemble crucial components and provide rare-earth metals for many modern electronics.

An additional round of tariffs is projected for February 18, affecting TSMC and other companies providing computer chips, aluminum, copper, and other items. The President believes the tariffs will convince foreign companies to build manufacturing plants in the US. However, establishing a new semiconductor fab takes several years, so any meaningful response from TSMC wouldn't bear fruit within Trump's term.

To that end, TSMC plans to begin manufacturing 4nm chips in Arizona this year, with more advanced nodes like 3nm and 2nm following through the rest of the decade. However, these semiconductors will lag behind the most advanced nodes produced in Taiwan. Recent rumors suggest that TSMC will construct a 1nm Giga-Fab in Tainan City, Taiwan.

This is a just a hard-nosed business tactic to get the border countries to do more to stop immigration.
I know some of you likely love that the US was flooded by illegal aliens during incompetent Joe Biden's presidency but something has to be done about it. Trump wouldn't be doing it if Biden had not gotten on tv and said to the whole world "I can't turn them away".
Notice the article says "COULD" cause an increase. It hasn't yet and it remains to be seen if it will all go through or not. Lets not go cutting ourselves and pulling our hair out just yet. Grab your favorite pacifier and take deep breaths. The paranoia is getting the best of you.

Exactly. The Democrats are already reacting to something that hasn't even happened yet.

The wording used:

"Loom on the horizon"
"TSMC might increase prices"
"May accelerate the increasing costs"

Also, isn't TSMC in the US anyway, with fabs supporting Apple, NVIDIA, and AMD?

Give it time...they will back down in one way or another.
Mexico backed down.
Canada backed down.
One of the south American countries backed down.
It doesn't matter. These people are so trump deranged that there is nothing he could do that they would give him credit for.
So strange after 4 years of Biden these people are worried about Trump messing things up. Same people who are up in arms over illegal criminals being removed from the US I suppose. Same people devastated over January 6th but fine with the George Floyd riots that killed 22 people and burned down people's lively hood. Strange days..

Sure buddy, Chump is the backed down in record time. Canada already had announced retaliation against the meat-head red states with targeted tariffs. Even the pathetic loser Republicans in Congress and the Senate answer to their constituents ultimately. Chump can threaten them all he wants but the people decide their fate not Chump.

And as though Colombia has anything to bargain with, of course they had to back down. Mexico already doing deals with China and hopefully they p!ss America off for BRICS.

Inconvenient truth, it was lower under Biden than Chump. Ooh wait what. Don't worry about facts they don't fit the BS agenda.

They have started building manufacturing in the US thanks to the CHIPS-act but
A) non of this is functionel yet
B) as far as I know production is just for the die. To make a product out of it you need a whole lot more, some of the raw materials will have to come from overseas as well.

In the long term is probably for the best of the US but I dont see how it would pay off within Trumps term.

Shocking. Absolutely shocking, I say!

A company would pass along their costs for tariffs to their customers?

Absolutely shocking.

IMO, the better option was The Chips Act. But Trump has to take credit for the good the Chips Act does somehow. Trump just cannot accept the fact he is a loser who is incapable of telling the truth.

So you like Trump's efforts to exceed his constitutional authority with every single EO he's issued so far?

Sounds about right.

Every will pass the tariffs until it reach the end customers, so why don't you guys straight tell the consumers you are putting tariffs on them?

Some here don't understand how tariffs work and who bears the costs.

I never said anything about his EOs. I don't like everything he's done. I don't think ALL the Jan 6th people should be pardoned for example. And I have no idea how this tariff stuff will play out either. My hope is that his threats will work and we won't see them implemented long term. But I have no idea...it may all go to hell in a handbasket. Only time will tell....
I'm not like some here who pick a side and refuse to admit when that side is wrong. So brainwashed with their tribalism bs.

Can you elaborate if I'm wrong or missed anything? Do you mean this will not be passed to the consumers in any way?
Nope. You are not wrong. Some people here do not understand that the tariffs will be paid by consumers - assuming the consumers can afford them.

You're not the only one who does not like everything he's done. It will take efforts like this, which are starting, for anything to change - https://apnews.com/article/50501-pr...ate-capitols-ddd341171a54ba9b498cbfe7530e18ab

Trump is about to find out that the US is not another one of his companies and cannot be run by fiat.

Imagine how much more expensive it would be if we parted ways with China completely
