Rumor mill: Sony is collaborating with AMD once again to develop the next generation of PlayStation consoles, and progress appears to be going smoothly. According to a new leak, the chip design for the future PlayStation 6 is essentially complete and nearly ready to enter the manufacturing phase.

Sony is currently trying to convince gamers that the modest improvements of the PlayStation 5 Pro can justify its hefty $700 price tag, and the console is reportedly performing well in the market. Meanwhile, the Japanese giant is also hard at work on the next generation of PlayStation hardware, with AMD confirmed as the key partner for designing the system-on-a-chip at the heart of the upcoming gaming machine.

Well-known tipster KeplerL2 previously reported that Sony and AMD were working on two different PS6 SoCs. Now, the same leaker has provided additional details about the progress of the SoC, revealing that the chip design is complete and has already entered the pre-silicon validation phase. According to KeplerL2, the "A0 tapeout" is scheduled for late this year, which suggests that the new console could arrive on the market earlier than anticipated.

Sony is known for following a reliable hardware development cycle, with the A0 tapeout phase typically completed about two years before the final product is released to retail channels. KeplerL2 confirmed that Sony is adhering to the same pattern, meaning we could see a new generation of PlayStation hardware as early as 2027.

The PlayStation 6 is expected to be based on AMD's Zen 6 architecture, the company's upcoming CPU technology manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process node. Zen 6 is projected to launch in 2026 in PC products. KeplerL2 also noted that the new CPU microarchitecture is design complete, with certain components set to be fabricated on TSMC's 2nm node.

The GPU of the PlayStation 6 is described as an early fork of AMD's "gfx13," part of the "UDNA" architecture that the company is reportedly developing to create a true next-generation flagship accelerator, replacing the RDNA-based designs.

A few months ago, anonymous sources revealed that Intel had attempted to establish a profitable partnership with Sony to produce PlayStation x86 SoCs, but AMD successfully outbid the competition once again.

Another intriguing rumor about the PlayStation 6 has emerged from Chinese forums, such as Chiphell, where users are discussing the potential adoption of 3D V-Cache technology. The new console may leverage AMD's "Halo" tech to stack cache RAM chiplets on both the CPU and GPU. Although the specific packaging method has not yet been disclosed, stacked cache technology could deliver a significant performance boost to the new PlayStation. Notably, even Microsoft is reportedly exploring this solution for its next-gen console.

Well if Sony is pricing that PS6 as high as their PS5 Pro then they have a sales failure in their hands for sure.

We got a lot of time before the PS6 arrives, but I think a lot depends on how many units the PS5 Pro sells in the next two years. If a $700 console does really well then Sony will definitely want that price point to be the new norm. They could also release two variants right from the start (although unlikely) costing $500 for the standard one and $700 for the "Pro" model.

The only way that PS5 Pro moves in sales is if Sony drops its price to $549.99 and the standard PS5 to $499.99, and 399.99 for the digital otherwise that Pro variant is only for hardcore PlayStation gamers which it will be a problem for Sony once the Switch 2 launches reducing significant potential sales for PlayStation.

Sadly all PlayStation had this generation was unnecessary remasters and remakes of the PS4 era.
I agree with this. I have so far skipped the 5th generation because I haven't seen a compelling reason to buy in. Maybe the 6th will have something that catches my eye.

So far, with Civ 7 where the Maya can become the Russians, boring Switch 2 and overhyped RTX 50 series... I'm personally, genuinely underwhelmed when back in 2024 I had really high hopes for 2025 being a banner year for gaming. 😞

I'll reinforce these feelings with my wallet so they know it.

Our wallets speak louder than words...wish most people would use their wallets to make a statement instead of their empty words.

My family still has PS4, was thinking getting the PS5pro later in year - but if PS6 is not that far away. may just get a real cheap PS5 as holdover . All moot till I upgrade my plasma TV - no hurry to do that either .

2027 will probably be same year build whole new Zen 6 PC , tope of line 32-36" monitor as well. Never in a hurry as only a hobby - enjoy more building/planning a build than the build anyway

I don't see X3D cache being worth the money for the CPU-bit. When are the newer Zen architectures ever CPU-limited on WQHD or higher gaming? However with an APU the GPU half could definitely benefit from it. AMDs Infinity cache introduced with the RX 6000 series showed that a little bit of high speed memory can go a long way.

This will be the last PlayStation console. After this it will all be Cloud gaming with the advent of AI Data centers and Wi-Fi 7. No need for any stronger hardware since Cloud gaming data centers will have all the new hardware for generations to come and easily transfer that data over Wi-Fi 7.

PS6 Pro with V-cache and other improvements for $700 on day one?
New concoles have always had better hardware than the average PC at the time of their release. A few years into their cycle and they become older hardware. It's been like this since forever.

Doubt that's set in stone already. Think that will largely come down to how well the PS6 sells and if the infrastructure in all regions is up to snuff for reliable low latency high bandwidth gaming. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony still releases a PS7 but that Microsoft won't bother releasing a competitor, they have been much more cloud invested.

Personally I hope it doesn't happen at any time whilst I'm alive. Nothing good has ever gone from not owning the hardware/software.
It's always the same promise of lower costs and convenience. Until it's a success, the old way of doing things no longer exists. Then prices keep going up and up. One they teach a point where people start dropping it they start removing the convenience or add straight up nuisances (think ads).
I'd rather not give the big corps even more power.

PS4 generation is the only exception to this imo. Even when it came out it already had mediocre hardware*. Also explains why some of the latest PS3 rivaled the PS4 visually.

*It was still better than the average PC system but not better than the average new gaming build sold at the time. Halfway its lifespan it didn't even have a cost advantage anymore

I sympathize. At least we are getting KCD 2 on Feb 4.

Concoles today still struggle with 1080p/60fps.

Nothing is set in stone. But the PS7 release date is looking at a 2035 timeline, and the world will prolly be very different with AI and cloud everything being the norm. Wi-Fi 8 will be out by then too.
