Obsidian's fantasy RPG Avowed is the first to enable Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Battle.net cross-buy

Why it matters: When Obsidian's upcoming RPG, Avowed, launches on February 18, players who access the game through Game Pass or purchase a digital copy outside of Steam will be able to play it on Xbox Series consoles, Microsoft's Xbox app for PC, or Blizzard's Battle.net launcher. Whether future Microsoft-published games will support Battle.net cross-buy remains unclear, but this move suggests a potential expansion of Blizzard's platform within Microsoft's ecosystem.

Microsoft's Game Pass subscription has garnered praise for offering relatively low-cost access to a consistent stream of new and popular titles. However, PC subscribers have long expressed frustration with the Xbox app used for installing games through Game Pass. Blizzard's games still rely on the company's well-regarded Battle.net launcher, and Obsidian's Avowed is the first non-Blizzard title that allows subscribers and buyers to choose between the Xbox app and Battle.net, possibly indicating a shift in policy.

Following Microsoft's historic $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Blizzard's library was added to Game Pass, but its games remained tied to Battle.net instead of being transitioned to the Xbox app. While most Game Pass titles run through Microsoft's storefront, playing Diablo, Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, and StarCraft on PC Game Pass requires installing Battle.net.

Although PC users often bemoan the need for additional launchers, Blizzard fans likely prefer Battle.net to the Xbox app. The latter has faced years of criticism due to bugs and a relatively light feature set. Although Battle.net mostly only hosts Blizzard titles, fans consider it more reliable by comparison.

Non-Blizzard games like Call of Duty and Crash Bandicoot have been available through Battle.net for years, but Avowed's inclusion suggests that Microsoft may be willing to bring more of its first-party catalog to the platform. Moreover, Avowed is the first title to allow non-subscribers to seamlessly switch between playing on Xbox consoles, the Xbox app, or Battle.net.

To enable cross-buy, users must link their Battle.net and Microsoft accounts by logging into Battle.net, clicking on their username in the top-right corner, navigating to Account Settings > Connections, and selecting Xbox Network to log into their Microsoft account.

In addition to providing an alternative to the Xbox app, this integration also creates a potential pathway for Game Pass subscribers to play Avowed on the Steam Deck. Hopefully, Microsoft extends Battle.net cross-buy to other in-house titles like the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages and South of Midnight, or recent releases like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Avowed is an open-world action RPG set in the Pillars of Eternity universe, heavily focusing on nonlinear quests. The game launches on Xbox consoles, Game Pass, Battle.net, and Steam on February 18. Players who purchase the premium edition will gain early access starting February 13. The game requires 75GB of storage space, and Obsidian recommends an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT for smooth gameplay.

If only Sony would do same with PlayStation and their PC ports.

But Sony would never even consider it as long as people keep blindly buying both versions unnecessarily.

If this means I can sneak my Game Pass subscription onto my Steam Deck via Battle.net, I will happily take a thousand launchers.

In a post Steam Deck era, this is much less attractive. Buying the game on Steam and being able to easily bring the game with you wherever you go is awesome... not having that means "no thanks" from me. And I used the word "easily" because putting Battle.net on Deck would leave one glaring problem (besides being a cumbersome workaround), and that would be game saves and all the other niceties you get with Steam like controller settings following you wherever you go, etc.

Curious to see how this one turns out.
The art style is just not overly impressive imo.

Agree, my first impression as well. Not a huge fan of this cartoonish look that Veilguard took as well. Obsidian makes some really games so I will def try it.

Is this the game produced by a mentally disturbed guy, who (while white) dissed the whole white population in some woke frenzy? Wouldn't put much hope in It. I think it will be successful as much as latest Dragon Age.
It would be offensive to me if I gave him even as much as one dollar.
Enough with supporting haters, black, white or Asian. Hate is universal, wrong does not change its meaning based on who is doing it. If you want to play a game like this, pirate it.

Exactly this. The guy is a total whack job obsessed with his social justice religion craziness.

Most people think I'm white as I look and "act" white, I'm not. The thing is, we don't need white people to virtue signal for us out of white guilt or any of that crap. So, yeah, he's right about them being *****s. The thing is, he's one of the *****s. We aren't asking white people to "feel bad" for us. We don't need people to tell us that we are "disadvantaged" in some way and tell us that we're "victims."

You either get out of the hood because you want to make a better life for yourself or you stay in the hood and let it consume you because that's the life you want. Most of us would rather you just be upfront about being racist rather than saying "I'm sorry" for something that most peoples families either had nothing to do with AT ALL or nothing to do with in hundreds of years. The best way that I can put it is that most of these "virtuous white people" are so busy feeling sorry for us that they forget we're actually people that are 100% capable of making our own decisions. I'm far more offended by someone thinking that I'm not capable of making my down decisions than by any racial slur I've ever been called. None of the people that want to make excuses for us on our behalf know what it's like to grow up in that situation, what societal and cultural factors/influences are there and why that type of life might appeal to someone. You grow up in the hood, everyone just knows you're going to end up in jail for one reason or another so you go hard. You party, you get money, you spend money and then you end up doing A LOT OF JAIL TIME. The thing that white people don't understand is that that is a choice that people make 100% willingly. My dad made sure I got to goto a good private school, but I almost got caught up in that life in my early 20's because as a young man pumped full of testosterone, that life really appealed to me.

And while I haven't voted since I voted in 2008, you'd be surprised how many people of color are trump supporters because "we don't need you guys telling us what's wrong with us. We know what's wrong with us." Then being told we're wrong about knowing what's wrong with us is even more offensive. Like, what, we're too dumb to know how to take care of ourselves? It's like some sort of new aged racism where people trying to fight racial inequality are actually causing more racial inequality by trying to fight it. People of color are not a vehicle to be used through virtual signalling so other people can feel good about themselves. It seems like some sort of way of fighting neuroticism or something.

This 100%.
Acting like non-white people need white people to save them or stick up for them is damn insulting. Every color of people is capable of taking care of themselves but for whatever reason the white liberal believes everyone needs them to save the day. And that is about as racist as it gets.

So many of the problems that people of color face are just regular things everyone deals with caused by general economic problems that impact everyone and could be solved by creating a functioning economy. The right likes to call out the left for lots of the dumb stuff they do, but I don't think the left truly understands how racist they've become in their fight against racism. Atleast Nazi's will admit that they're racist, the liberals use racism to feel good about themselves and people of color are just the tool they use to do that.

Completely agree. It's interesting because it's almost like they use social justice as a tool to prop themselves up over everyone else. Some kind social and moral superiority...which is probably why they love to accuse everyone and everything of being racist.

Another glorious MODERN AUDIENCE game, can't wait for Obsidian to die.

Too busy playing KCD2. It's the ultimate open-world RPG. Incredible game.
How old is Hans when he engages in some 'fun time' in this game?

The story continues right after the first game. There is like a 2 day time skip, so however long he was in the first game. And he is even more of a shithead at the start.

But what a game brotha. I actually can't believe how incredible it is. And what they pulled off is crazy.

I have only heard great things so far, I’m gunna have to play it soon I think.

I never played the first one, it’s in my back catalog of games to play, worth playing through that first before getting the second?

Yeah, the first game holds up well still, I replayed it just before the second one launched. But just you know, go in there with the expectation of a bit of jank and performance issues at certain points during big fights. The second one has none of the performance issues at all so they worked out a lot of the kinks.

It's a very impressive game.

I don't intend this to come off as dismissive of your point, so if it does I'll apologize up front... but gaming for me... especially with a genre like RPGs, is about immersion and no small part about escaping the world. Steam decking a gorgeously rendered 4k scene and pushing the orchestral audio through ear buds (or worse) seems like a waste of what could be an amazing multi-sensory experience (that can even be shared with a family member).

For me, my dark basement with a big TV and soundbar is RPG land... Steam deck for me is Tetris, emulators, card games or maybe the occasional 8bit roguelike.

From another genre perspective, 4X. When you look at the scale and quality of some of these titles... if you can effectively play it from a steam deck; chances are there is a forum full of genre fans lamenting the "console-ization" of their beloved game... dumbing down is the less kind description offered. 4X shines brightest with keyboard & mouse.

Your down time, game time, is your sacred ritual to recharge your body and mind... you use it to recover from the **** the world throws at you everyday. It deserves reverence, and dedicated time and space wherever you can make it possible. Don't let people only gunning for a slice of your wallet convince you that your game must be squeezed in to 30 minutes on a train ride..  you and your time, your mental health and your money are worth more.

Enough with companies telling us to compromise.

He's 15.

I think it is good to pay once for a game and be able to play it on multiple platforms. I am however apprehensive of the game content. May be it is just the screenshots here, but blue guy, what seems like a darker skin tone lady...
